As we get older and we mature we start to get closer and connect with adults more and more. It becomes easier for teenagers to understand the stress and struggle that most adults live through; especially the struggle teachers go through. Throughout my years at Hightstown High School I always ended up having the same teacher Mr. Balmung. Not only was he my wrestling coach but he was also a phenomenal English teacher. Mr. Balmung and I mingled ever since freshman year after I wrote and entire four-page essay on “Why we should ban mirrors in America.”
I have struggled with writing all my life. I get a quick temper when I can’t get my thoughts aligned correctly. Putting my thoughts down on papers has always been difficult for me. My ideas are all over the place and my organization just isn’t grade. Mr. Balmung noticed my struggles and worked with me. Mr. Balmung wouldn’t feed into my temper. He didn’t have any tolerance for me to get frustrated and give up. When I would start to quit he would push me harder. He would be right by my side all through out any essay.
I was never good at writing well-constructed essays. My thoughts are always all over the place and the paper never seems to flow well. I would always rush my work to get it done so I never took the time to go back and edit my work. Mr. Balmung preached “revision, revision, revision.” Any work I handed into him he would give it right back and told me to read it over at lunch and give it back to him at the end of the day. He knew that I didn’t look over my work so he forced me too. I am so grateful for this. He taught me to slow down and take the extra time to re-read over the paper and edit what feels right. My papers drastically improved.
Aside from working with writing Mr. Balmung helped me become a social butterfly. Working with people I didn’t feel comfortable with made my anxiety skyrocket, and he clearly saw it. Mr. Balmung knew that I am a very easy person to get along with; I just didn’t enjoy talking to new people. He forced me to work in groups with people I didn’t know all thought out my high school career. This made me talk to and work with people that I wasn’t comfortable with. This was a blessing. I have bloomed because of him. I would not know nearly as many great people in my life if it weren’t for him.
Whether it was tolerating my anger, helping me with my writing, or forcing me to meet new people Mr. Balmung was always by my side. He taught me to take a deep breath and get the work don’t, getting hot headed only hindered me. My writing within itself has drastically improved, my writing is much more clear and organized. Finally, he helped me meet some of the greatest people in my life. I am blessed to have him as a teacher.
